Family planning and trying to conceive is a big step in any couples’ life. You need to straighten out your food habits and make a disciplined routine for yourself including strict tracking of your cycle. But what if you are doing all of that and yet despite all the planning you are getting nowhere? Maybe there is a bigger underlying concern. Many a times, because of the kind of lifestyle we keep and the rat race we are subject to, we as women encounter issues that affect our fertility and is a hurdle to conceiving a baby. One of the causes of infertility is Premature Ovarian Failure (POF). Let’s dive into the details. What is Premature Ovarian Failure (POF)?The primary function of your ovaries is to produce eggs and the required hormones with it which are essential in bringing about embryo implantation and subsequent pregnancy in a women. They are also responsible for the hormones that protect the fertility through its 36 weeks. Premature Ovarian Failure takes place when the ovaries stop releasing the eggs, and appropriate hormonal levels will see a significant dip. This is different from early menopause since in the menopause the ovaries slowly start to produce fewer eggs and hormones and eventually stop. But in POF we see an abrupt loss of functions in the ovaries, and it will have the same effect as a phenomenon in a woman whose ovaries are removed. The condition is also referred to as Premature Ovarian Insufficiency. What are the causes of infertility due to a Premature Ovarian Failure?• Chromosomal defects - Chromosomal defects is one of the main genetically relevant reasons for this condition to occur. It is a genetic disorder which can be caused by a long unrecorded gene mutation. This includes the Mosaic Turner syndrome in which there is only one X chromosome which is normal and the other X chromosome which is fragile and breaks easily. • Toxins – Strong radiation and prolonged chemotherapy is a significant contributor to premature ovarian failure. Cells in the ovaries are made up of genes. The radiation affects these cells adversely and renders them incapable. Other days to day toxins like being a regular cigarette smoker, pollution, and chemicals, the pesticides in our diet, all contribute to the toxins that we are subjected to in everyday life. • Auto Immune disease – In an autoimmune disease, the body primarily attacks itself. The immune system and white blood cells in your body produce antibodies which attack your ovarian tissue which in turn harms its internal function. It affects the egg stimulating follicles and reduces your FSH levels which damage the egg cycle after cycle. • Hereditary – a previous family history of a direct family member who has had this similar condition might expose you to the possibility of developing this condition and as early onset. • Age – Though the Premature Ovarian Failure may affect women of all ages, even as young as someone in their teens up to 27 years of age. But like pregnancy, as the years pass and your age increases, the risk of developing this condition rises proportionately with it. Heart-breaking as it may seem, don’t be disheartened. With the advances that science has made, there are hormone replacement treatments, medications and ovum donation and IVF that can help towards giving you a fighting chance to win over the condition and experiencethe joy of pregnancy and motherhood.
